Recent Project: Internal Glass Panels, Manchester

Working for Bowmer & Kirkland at the City Park office development, our 12-person team manually handled 10 tonnes of internal glass panels across 12 floors. Each floor received 25 panels at approximately 50 kg per panel. To minimise disruption, the programme was delivered across six weekends, with full RAMS and health & safety compliance throughout.

What is Manual Handling?

Manual handling covers transporting a load by hand or bodily force—including lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, and carrying. It’s a common source of workplace injury, which is why we apply rigorous planning and controls.

Legal Duties & Our Approach

1. Avoid hazardous manual handling wherever possible.
2. Assess any unavoidable hazardous handling.
3. Minimise the risk of injury as far as is reasonably practicable.

We complete a manual handling risk assessment using the TILE framework:

• Task – movement, posture, frequency, and distance.
• Individual – competence, capability, and team size.
• Load – weight, size, stability, and grip.
• Environment – space, stairs, access, lighting, and surfaces.
